Barrie Colts defenseman Beau AK is headed to oil country


The Waterloo native was picked 56th overall by Edmonton with a second-round pick

Barrie Colts defenseman Beau Eck didn’t have to wait long to hear his name named in the NHL Entry Draft on Thursday, where the second round began this morning in Nashville.

The 18-year-old Waterloo native was selected 56th overall by the Edmonton Oilers with a second-round selection. It was Edmonton’s first choice in the draft, as the franchise did not have a selection in the first round, which took place on Wednesday night.

According to NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings for the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Eke was ranked No. 33 among North American skaters.

AK had 47 points (11G, 36A) in 66 games with the Colts last season in Barrie, his second campaign with the Colts. His point total ranked him 19th overall in the Ontario Hockey League among blueliners. He also added two goals and three assists in 13 playoff games last season.

The right-handed offensive defenseman stands at six feet tall and weighs 175 pounds.
