A Special Air Quality Statement has been issued for most of Southern Ontario including London-Middlesex, Huron-Perth and Sarnia-Lambton.

According to meteorologist Julie Atchison of CTV News London, smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario is entering the area through a high-pressure system, and is prompting special air quality statements.

On Wednesday morning Atchison said poor air quality would continue throughout the day and was expected to fall into the “high risk” category.

Given the Canada Day long weekend, wildfire smoke is expected to subside, but rain is expected on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and temperatures will reach the mid-to-high 20s.

A warning from local health units

On Tuesday, Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU), Southwestern Public Health and Gray Bruce Public Health all issued warnings about poor air quality and ways residents can protect themselves.

As of 1 p.m., the MLHU said the air quality health index was at a rating of three or low risk, but is forecast to reach five or moderate risk later in the day. The Air Quality Health Index will reach a risk of seven or higher overnight and into Thursday.

“When Environment Canada issues the Special Air Quality Statement, it is important for people to know how they are feeling when they work hard or spend time outside,” said Dr. Alex Summers, MLHU Medical Officer of Health. Are.”

With this in mind, health units recommend reducing outdoor activity if people are at risk and suffer from lung disease, asthma, heart disease, are older adults, have young children or are pregnant.

They include drinking plenty of water, closing doors and windows at home, installing high-quality air filters in the ventilation system, wearing an N95 mask when outdoors, and reducing or stopping activities and staying indoors when experiencing difficulty breathing or other negative symptoms.
