Mexico have seen their quality decline over the years as they have not won a CONCACAF trophy since the 2019 Gold Cup. The USA has won the tournament on three previous occasions, including the Nations League in 2020 and 2023 as well as the 2021 Gold Cup. They will look to finish on top again in this year’s Gold Cup, although they will have to get through the group stage first.

Honduras have lost their last two matches in a row, including a 4-1 loss to Canada in a Nations League match and a 1-0 loss to Venezuela in a friendly earlier this month. They haven’t beaten Mexico since 2017 and have been whitewashed 7-0 by El Tri in their last three encounters. They come into this match as underdogs and will be hoping to put up a fight, but Mexico should be able to handle business in their opening match of the 2023 Gold Cup.
