Barry Trotz’s first official day as general manager of the Nashville Predators coincided with the first day of free agency in the NHL.

In line with the way he has conducted business since being hired in late February, Trotz wasted little time continuing “an organizational process that began at the trade deadline” on Saturday, when He agreed to terms with a pair of former Toronto Maple Leafs forwards. One, defenseman Luke Shannon, 33, will come to Nashville on a three-year, $8.25 million contract.

The other is Ryan O’Reilly, 32. He will reportedly sign a four-year, $18 million deal.

Shortly after those moves, the Predators selected 33-year-old forward Gustav Nyquist on a two-year, $6.37 million deal.

The move came a day after the team purchased the contract of forward Matt Duchene and a week after trading center Ryan Johansson to the Colorado Avalanche.

Schenn, the fifth overall pick in the 2008 draft, has scored 42 goals and 149 assists in 933 games over his 15-year career. The 6-foot-2, 229-pounder finished last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 6-1, 207-pounder O’Reilly has scored 256 goals and 446 assists in 991 games over 14 seasons.

Schenn won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021 with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ryan O’Reilly won the Conn Smith Award in 2019 when he led the St. Louis Blues to the title.

The Predators also signed restricted free agent Cody Glass to a two-year, $5 million deal.

After the move, the Predators were left with over $11.2 million in projected salary-cap space capfriendly.com,
