Nick Kyrgios taken out of wimbledon on the eve of this year’s tournament after failing to recover from a wrist injury.
“I did my best to get ready after my surgery and be able to step onto the Wimbledon courts again,” said the 28-year-old Australian, who lost before reaching the final last year Novak Djokoviksaid in a message on his Instagram Stories on Sunday.
“During my return, during the week in Mallorca I experienced some pain in my wrist. As a precaution, I got it scanned and it showed a torn ligament in my wrist.
“I did everything possible to be able to play and I’m disappointed to say that I didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.”
Kyrgios is yet to play in a Grand Slam this year as he missed both the Australian Open and the French Open due to injuries.
He missed Roland Garros after injuring his foot during an event the car was stolenaccording to his agent.
The world number 33 was due to face Belgium’s David Goffin in the first round of Wimbledon and had planned to play the doubles tournament with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinaki.
Wimbledon responded to the news by wishing Kyrgios a “speedy recovery”.
“Hope to have you back on our courts next year,” the tournament Tweeted,
Wimbledon starts on Monday and will go on till July 16. Novak Djokovic is the favorite to once again win the men’s tournament, where he can match Roger Federer’s record eight Wimbledon men’s titles.
