The remains were found by a group of civilian hikers in the Mount Baldy Wilderness. He contacted the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department.

Representatives from the Fontana Sheriff’s Station responded to the scene.

The remains were taken to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office, where an investigation into the identity of the deceased will be completed next week.

Earlier this week, Sands’ family released a statement for the first time since she disappeared while hiking in the Mount Baldy area in January.

“We keep Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and an original and collaborative artist,” the statement said.

British-born actor Sands, 65, best known for his role in the 1985 film “A Room with a View,” has been married to journalist Evgenia Sitkowitz for more than three decades, and they have three adult children.

The towering Mount Baldy rises more than 10,000 feet east of Los Angeles, and it’s a frequent spot for avid hikers like Sands.
